Cobalt Drill Bits

Cobalt drills are a combination of high-speed steel (HSS) and a percentage of cobalt (HSS-Co). Performacut drills contain between 5% and 7.5% cobalt. The addition of cobalt to HSS creates a drill bit which can operate at higher temperatures, therefore greater speeds and feeds. Cobalt drills are often used for drilling harder materials and, due to their ability to cope with higher temperatures, in applications where coolant isn’t desired.
